The Goodfellas Smile Royal Lime aftershave shown in the alcohol-free splash and the alcohol version side by side

Alcohol vs Alcohol-Free Aftershave: How to Choose

Walk through any wet shaving range and you will find two quite different products sold under the same word. One is the traditional splash, built on alcohol, the kind that announces itself the moment it lands. The other is an alcohol-free splash, built on a water and botanical base, that lands quietly and stays put. These are not two strengths of the same thing. They are two different builds, and choosing between them changes how the last thirty seconds of your shave feel.

It is a comparison we can set up more cleanly than most, because several of the scents on our shelves exist in both builds, from the same maker, in the same bottle size.

What actually separates the two

A traditional aftershave splash is mostly alcohol. On the label it appears as Alcohol Denat., usually first or second in the ingredient list, with water, fragrance and a short tail of everything else behind it. The Goodfellas’ Smile alcohol aftershaves follow that pattern exactly, and they list menthol as well.

An alcohol-free splash replaces that carrier altogether. Barbieri Uniti, the Italian house that produces The Goodfellas’ Smile, publishes its alcohol-free formula as zero alcohol and 95 percent natural ingredients: organic aloe vera gel, witch hazel and perfume. Taconic Shave builds its botanical splashes on an organic aloe vera base infused with witch hazel, with glycerin and allantoin, and a light hit of menthol.

Cella Milano splits the same way, but across two products rather than two versions of one. Cella describes its After Shave Lotion as delicately alcoholic, and sells a separate alcohol-free balm for anyone who wants the other finish. Both are 100 ml.

The same scent, made both ways

This is the part worth paying attention to, because it removes the usual problem with comparing aftershaves. Normally you are weighing two different scents from two different houses, and you cannot tell what is down to the build and what is down to the perfume. The Goodfellas’ Smile sells several scents in both versions, so the alcohol is the only variable that moves.

Four matched pairs are in stock right now, every one of them 100 ml and made in Italy:

Amber Fougere exists both ways as well. Buy any one of these scents twice, once in each build, and you have a direct test that no amount of reading will give you.

How each one feels

Alcohol evaporates fast, and that is the entire mechanism behind the traditional splash. It flashes off the face, carries heat away as it goes, and leaves the brief cold sting that a great many shavers treat as the proper end of a shave. If you grew up with a barbershop splash, that sensation is probably what the word aftershave means to you. The Goodfellas alcohol formulas list menthol too, and mint appears in several of the published scent pyramids, so the cold edge of that finish is deliberate.

An alcohol-free splash does none of that. There is no flash and no sting, and the fluid sits on the face a moment longer before it dries down. For many shavers that suits a very close shave, or a cold dry Montreal February, better than the bracing version does. It is a quieter finish, and whether quieter is better is a question of taste rather than quality.

Scent, and how long it stays

Alcohol is a carrier as much as a sensation. It lifts the top notes off the skin immediately, which is why an alcohol splash often reads loud in the first few minutes and then settles back. An alcohol-free splash has no volatile carrier doing that work, so the same perfume generally starts quieter and sits closer in.

Neither behaviour is a fault. If you want the aftershave to be the fragrance you wear for the morning, the alcohol version is doing more of that job for you. If you would rather put a proper cologne on afterwards and not have the two argue, the alcohol-free one stays out of the way. Our aftershave range runs to 38 products, so there is room to keep one of each on the shelf.

What you actually get in the bottle

Volumes are worth checking, because they are not standard across the category. The Goodfellas’ Smile bottles are 100 ml in both builds. Cella’s lotion and balm are both 100 ml. The Taconic botanical splashes are 4 oz, closer to 118 ml, so a Taconic bottle lasts noticeably longer than an Italian one at the same rate of use.

Price is not the deciding factor here. At the time of writing the Goodfellas alcohol-free splashes and their alcohol counterparts sit within about a dollar and a half of each other, so the question is genuinely which finish you want rather than what it costs.

Reading the label before you buy

Two tells settle it quickly. Alcohol Denat. near the top of an ingredient list means an alcohol build. And The Goodfellas’ Smile prints the answer on the bottle: the alcohol-free bottles carry DOPOBARBA 0% ALCOOL across the front label, which is about as unambiguous as labelling gets.

Menthol is the other thing to look for, and it crosses the divide. It appears in the Goodfellas alcohol formulas and also in the Taconic alcohol-free base, so going alcohol free does not automatically mean going warm. If you want the cold on purpose, Taconic Eucalyptus Mint adds eucalyptus, spearmint and menthol on top of the menthol already in that base. If you want none of it, read the list.

Where this sits next to the other choices

This is not the same question as splash or balm. That one is about the form the finish takes, and we covered it in aftershave splash vs balm. This one is about what the splash itself is built on, and the two answers are independent: alcohol-free splashes exist, balms exist, and they are not the same product.

It is not the same question as the alum block either, which is about what happens before the aftershave rather than instead of it. That one is in alum block vs aftershave splash.

So which one

If the sting is the part of the shave you look forward to, buy the alcohol version and do not overthink it. If you shave daily, shave close, or simply never cared for that moment, the alcohol-free build gives you the same scents without it. And if you cannot decide, pick one of the four scents above that exists both ways, start with whichever appeals, and you will know inside a week.
