Aftershave is the last step of a wet shave and largely a matter of taste. A splash gives a brisk, scented finish. A balm is heavier and less sharp. Alcohol-free versions leave out the alcohol bite entirely. An alum block is the traditional option, wetted and passed over the face after rinsing.
