The Simpsons Trafalgar T1 sets a 23 mm Sovereign grade synthetic knot into a compact faux ivory resin handle. It is the smallest brush in the Trafalgar series.

At 82 mm overall with a 40 mm handle, the T1 is a genuinely compact brush, which makes it easy to pack and easy to control on the face. The Sovereign fibre has soft tips with backbone behind them, so it loads a hard soap without collapsing. Simpsons have been making shaving brushes since Alexander Simpson started production in 1919, and the brushes are still made in England.

Lathering Performance

Synthetic filaments hold water on the surface of the fibre rather than absorbing it, so the knot loads quickly, releases lather freely and shakes almost dry in seconds. There is no break in period; the brush feels the same on the first shave as on the hundredth. The Sovereign fibre is cut to give soft tips over a firm base, so the T1 loads a hard puck readily despite the small knot and builds a dense lather on the face.

Getting the Best from Your Brush

1. Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two before you start, then shake out the excess.
2. Load the brush by working it over the soap or cream until the hair is fully charged.
3. Build the lather in a bowl or on the face, adding water a little at a time until it turns glossy.
4. A synthetic knot does not need breaking in, so it loads and feels the same from the first shave.

Adding water gradually rather than all at once is the usual difference between a thin lather and a thick one.

Care and Storage

Rinse the knot thoroughly under warm running water after every shave until the water runs clear, then shake out the excess and stand the brush bristles down so it can dry. Avoid boiling water, harsh detergents and leaving the brush sitting wet in an enclosed space. Do not stand the brush on its knot to dry. Soak the knot in warm water before the shave and keep the handle out of the water. Simpsons advise this for all their brushes, as it prolongs the life of the handle and the setting of the knot.
