This Gillette blade sampler gathers fifteen Gillette and Gillette-family double edge blades, five of each, seventy-five blades in total. Gillette does not make a single double edge blade: under the Gillette umbrella there are blades produced in several countries, sold under names including Nacet, Silver Blue, Perma-Sharp, 7 O’Clock, Wilkinson Sword and Astra, and they do not all shave the same way.

Some carry the Gillette name on the wrapper and some do not, but all fifteen come from the Gillette group of brands.

Blade preference is personal rather than a question of quality. Beard coarseness, skin sensitivity, water, razor and technique all move the answer, so the practical way to find your blade is to shave with several and pay attention.

These are standard double edge blades and are designed to fit standard double edge safety razors, including three-piece, twist-to-open and adjustable models.

Some vintage, half-blade and specialty razors have their own requirements, so if you are using an unusual razor it is worth checking your razor’s own guidance first.

How to Test the Blades

1. Change one thing at a time. Keep your razor, soap and technique the same while you work through the blades.
2. Give each blade more than one shave. A blade often feels different on the second and third pass than it does straight out of the wrapper.
3. Keep a short note of which blade you used and how the shave felt. Without it, seventy-five blades blur together.
4. Judge comfort as well as closeness. A blade that shaves close but leaves irritation is not the right blade for you.
5. Keep each blade in its own wrapper until you use it, so you always know which type you are picking up.

Five blades of a type is enough for a fair trial rather than a single impression, since most shavers get several shaves from one double edge blade.

Care and Safe Disposal

Keep unused blades dry and stored in their original wrappers. Place used blades in a sealed Razor Blade Bank or another puncture-resistant container. Never place loose blades directly in household trash.
