Description

Product Overview

The Simpsons Trafalgar T2 sets a 24 mm Sovereign grade synthetic knot into a faux ivory resin handle. It is the mid size brush in the Trafalgar series.

The T2 sits between the compact T1 and the larger T3, with a 46 mm handle and a 90 mm overall height. That gives it enough knot to build lather in a bowl while staying easy to control on the face. Simpsons have been making shaving brushes since Alexander Simpson started production in 1919, and the brushes are made today on the Isle of Man.

Lathering Performance

Synthetic filaments hold water on the surface of the fibre rather than absorbing it, so the knot loads quickly, releases lather freely and shakes almost dry in seconds. There is no break in period; the brush feels the same on the first shave as on the hundredth. The Sovereign fibre is cut to give soft tips over a firm base, so the T2 lifts soap out of a hard puck and builds a dense lather in a bowl or on the face.

Who This Brush Is Best For

No animal hair is used in a synthetic knot.
Everyday wet shavers
The mid size of the Trafalgar range, at home in a bowl or on the face.
First synthetic
A straightforward size to move to from a traditional badger brush.

Getting the Best from Your Brush

  1. Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two before you start, then shake out the excess.
  2. Load the brush by working it over the soap or cream until the hair is fully charged.
  3. Build the lather in a bowl or on the face, adding water a little at a time until it turns glossy.
  4. A synthetic knot does not need breaking in, so it loads and feels the same from the first shave.

Adding water gradually rather than all at once is the usual difference between a thin lather and a thick one.

Care and Storage

Rinse the knot thoroughly under warm running water after every shave until the water runs clear, then shake out the excess and stand the brush bristles down so it can dry. Avoid boiling water, harsh detergents and leaving the brush sitting wet in an enclosed space. Do not stand the brush on its knot to dry. Soak the knot in warm water before the shave and keep the handle out of the water. Simpsons advise this for all their brushes, as it prolongs the life of the handle and the setting of the knot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the knot?
The knot is 24 mm with a 44 mm loft, the mid size in the Trafalgar range. It suits both bowl lathering and face lathering.
Who makes this brush?
Simpsons, the British brush maker. Alexander Simpson began making shaving brushes in 1919 and the brushes are made on the Isle of Man today.
Why choose a synthetic brush over badger or boar?
A synthetic knot uses no animal hair, needs no breaking in, dries faster than natural hair and carries no animal smell. It also costs less than a badger brush of the same size.
Can I use this brush with both soap and cream?
Yes. A synthetic knot works with hard soaps, soft soaps and creams, and can be used for bowl lathering or face lathering.
How do I prepare the brush before shaving?
Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two, then shake out the excess. Keep the handle out of the water; Simpsons advise this for all their brushes.
Will a synthetic brush shed?
Synthetic filament knots are set into the handle and do not normally shed. An occasional stray filament in the first few uses is not unusual.
How should the brush be dried?
Rinse the knot thoroughly, shake out the water and stand the brush bristles down so air can circulate. Do not store it wet in a closed cabinet or a sealed travel tube.
How long does a synthetic brush last?
A synthetic knot holds its shape well with normal use. Rinse it thoroughly, dry it bristles down and keep it away from boiling water, which can damage the filaments.

Which Simpsons brush suits you?

Knot size

A smaller knot like the 23 mm T1 is easy to control around the nose and lips and packs well for travel. A larger knot like the 26 mm T3 or 27 mm Chubby 2 covers more of the face in each pass and holds more lather for a three-pass shave.

Loft

Loft is the length of the knot above the handle. A shorter loft, as on the T1, feels firmer and scrubs more. A longer loft, as on the T3 and Chubby 2, feels softer and flexes more.

Synthetic or badger

Synthetic knots are ready to use without soaking, dry quickly and suit soaps and creams alike. Badger holds warm water well and gives the traditional feel many wet shavers prefer. Read our guide to boar, badger and synthetic brushes.

Where to start

  • First brush or travel: Trafalgar T1 or T2
  • Everyday all-rounder: Trafalgar T3
  • Dense, wide synthetic: Chubby 2 Platinum
  • Traditional badger: Commodore X3 (currently out of stock; silvertip badger brushes are available now)

Caring for a Simpsons brush

  1. Rinse the knot under running water after every shave until no soap is left.
  2. Shake out the water and pat the knot on a towel.
  3. Let it dry in open air. A stand that holds the brush knot down helps water drain away from the handle.
  4. If you shave daily, two brushes used in turn give each one longer to dry.
  5. Once a month, wash the knot gently with a mild shampoo and rinse well.
