Lathering Performance

Boar bristle is stiff when it is new and softens as it is used. The tips split over the first few weeks of shaving, and as they do the knot becomes softer against the face and holds more lather. Boar keeps more backbone than badger throughout its life, which is why it lifts soap out of a hard puck so easily. A 23 mm knot on a 55 mm loft loads a hard puck quickly and is easy to control directly on the face.

Who This Brush Is Best For

Hard soap users
Boar has the backbone to lift soap straight out of a hard puck.
Face latherers
At 23 mm the knot is easy to control on the face.
Value
Omega boar brushes give a lot of brush for the money.

Getting the Best from Your Brush

  1. Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two before you start, then shake out the excess.
  2. Load the brush by working it over the soap or cream until the hair is fully charged.
  3. Build the lather in a bowl or on the face, adding water a little at a time until it turns glossy.
  4. Give a new boar brush a few weeks of regular use to break in. The tips split as the brush is used, which makes it noticeably softer and better at holding lather.

Adding water gradually rather than all at once is the usual difference between a thin lather and a thick one.

Care and Storage

Soak the bristles in warm water for a minute or two before the shave, not boiling water. Rinse the knot thoroughly after every shave until the water runs clear, then squeeze the water out gently without twisting the knot and leave the brush to dry in a well ventilated place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the knot?
The knot is 23 mm with a 55 mm loft on a brush standing 105 mm overall. It is a straightforward everyday size.
Does the colour change the brush?
No. The knot, the loft and the dimensions are the same whichever colour you choose. Only the handle colour differs, so pick on looks alone.
What is boar bristle like to shave with?
Boar is stiff when new and softens with use. As the tips split over the first few weeks they behave more like badger hair, so the brush gets softer and holds more lather the more you use it. It has more backbone than badger throughout its life.
Can I use this brush with both soap and cream?
Yes. Boar works with hard soaps, soft soaps and creams, and can be used for bowl lathering or face lathering.
How do I prepare the brush before shaving?
Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two, then shake out the excess water before loading your soap or cream.
Will a new brush shed hairs?
A few loose hairs in the first several uses are normal for a natural hair brush and usually stop on their own. Heavy shedding that continues is not normal.
How should the brush be dried?
Rinse the knot thoroughly, shake out the water and stand the brush bristles down so air can circulate. Do not store it wet in a closed cabinet or a sealed travel tube.
Does a new boar brush have a smell?
New boar brushes usually carry a faint animal smell for the first few washes. Lathering the brush with soap several times and rinsing well normally clears it.
