Product Overview

GROOM’s beard balm acts on three aspects at once, in its own words: nourishment, control and protection. It is the richer sibling of the beard oil, built for beards with enough length or coarseness that oil alone stops being enough.

The base is beeswax, shea butter and argan oil: the wax holds stray hair in check and shields against the elements, while the butters and oils feed the hair. It comes in the same three scents as the oil, so the two can be matched. 60 ml per tin.

What This Balm Does

Past a certain length a beard develops opinions: hair springs out sideways, dries at the ends and lets wind and cold straight through to the skin. Oil feeds it but cannot hold it. A balm adds wax, and wax is what gives a beard shape that survives the day.

GROOM recommends this balm for beards worn medium to long, and for very coarse, dry beards at any length. For short beards on healthy skin, its beard oil alone is usually the better fit.

Who This Is Best For

Medium to long beards
Enough hold to keep shape through a working day.
Coarse, dry beards
Beeswax and shea for hair that drinks oil and stays wiry.
Winter beards
A protective layer against wind, cold and dry indoor air.

How To Use It

Scrape a small amount from the tin, warm it between the palms until it melts, then work it through the beard from the skin outwards and shape with a comb or brush. Use after washing, on a dry or nearly dry beard.

Balm and oil stack: oil first for the skin, balm after for hold, or balm alone on a low-maintenance day.

Care and Storage

Keep the tin closed and away from heat. Balm that softens in warm weather sets again unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which scent should I pick?
Conifer is bergamot and lavender, the fresh one. Sandalwood is tobacco and spices, the warm one. Citrus is herbs and sea, the bright one. All three match the beard oil scents, so oil and balm can be paired.
Balm or oil?
GROOM recommends the balm for beards worn medium to long and for very coarse, dry beards; it is richer and more consistent than the oil. Short beards usually only need the oil.
What is in it?
A base of beeswax, shea butter and argan oil, with coconut oil, cocoa butter, hemp seed oil and jojoba among the supporting oils, and each scent’s own essential oils on top. All ingredients are of natural origin.
Does it hold like a wax?
It keeps stray hair in check and gives the beard shape, but it is a conditioning balm rather than a styling wax. For moustache sculpting GROOM makes a dedicated Moustache Wax.
Is it vegan?
No. The balm contains beeswax. GROOM does not describe its products as vegan; it states its ingredients are natural, from renewable sources and not tested on animals.
How do I apply it?
Warm a small scrape between the palms until it melts, work it through the beard from the skin outwards, then shape with a comb or brush.
How big is a tin?
60 ml, which is 2 fl. oz. Used a fingertip at a time, it lasts months.
Where is it made?
GROOM makes its products in-house at its Montreal workshop, and states that it has done so since 2013. GROOM describes its formulas as crafted from natural ingredients from renewable sources, and states that its products are not tested on animals. Since March 2021 GROOM has been certified plastic negative by a third party.
