Product Overview

This is the tub that made Cella’s name. A soft almond-scented cream soap, still made in Milan to a protocol Cella dates to 1899, and the default recommendation in Italian barbershops for a century.

It loads onto a wet brush in seconds and builds what Cella describes as a frothy, compact, softening foam. The almond scent is the other half of its reputation: unmistakable, and the reason people who use it tend to keep using it. 150 g.

What This Soap Does

A soft cream soap sits between a hard puck and a tube cream. It loads far faster than a puck because it is already soft, and it builds a denser lather than a tube cream because it is a soap rather than an emulsion. That combination is why the format survived.

Cella describes the result as a frothy, compact, softening high-performance foam that moisturizes the face during shaving, preventing irritation and leaving the skin soft. That is Cella’s claim for its own product, and it is the claim the reputation rests on.

Who This Is Best For

Brush shavers
The traditional Italian soft soap, loaded from the tub.
Almond scent
The scent Cella is known for, unchanged for generations.
Value per shave
A 150 g tub loaded a brushful at a time lasts a long while.

How To Lather It

Wet the brush in warm water, load it from the tub, then build the lather in a bowl with circular movements or straight on the face, spreading the foam evenly right down to the root. Cella’s own wording, and it works.

Let the surface dry before closing the tub. A soft soap kept wet softens further and disappears faster.

Care and Storage

Keep the tub closed and out of standing water, and let the surface dry between shaves. Stored dry it keeps for a long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it smell like?
Sweet almond. Cella calls it “its characteristic almond scent” and describes the ease with which the razor glides over the smooth texture as what makes the cream unmistakable.
Is it a soap or a cream?
Both words are used, and both fit. It is a soft cream soap: firm enough to sit in a tub and be loaded with a brush, soft enough that it loads in seconds rather than needing long swirling like a hard puck.
Does it contain tallow?
Cella does not publish an ingredient list for this or any of its products, and it does not state either tallow or a vegetable base anywhere on its official sites. We are not going to assert either on Cella’s behalf. If an animal-free product matters to you, that is a question worth putting to us before ordering rather than reading off a page.
Does it contain almond oil?
Cella names almond as the fragrance of its shaving creams rather than as an ingredient of this one. Sweet almond oil does appear on Cella’s list of the active ingredients it uses across its range, but Cella does not map that list to individual products, so we do not claim it for this tub specifically.
What is in it?
Cella publishes no ingredient list for any product on either of its official sites, so this page does not print one. What Cella does name for this product is stated above, and nothing has been added from a retailer or from guesswork.
Do I need a brush?
Yes. It is loaded from the tub with a wet brush and lathered in a bowl or on the face. Cella makes a separate rapid cream for shaving without a brush.
How big is it?
150 g. Sizes are published by Cella on its brand storefront. Its heritage site publishes none.
Who makes it?
Cella is a registered brand of Nicky Chini srl of Milan, Italy. Cella dates its shaving formula to 1899 and states that its shaving cream is still made to that original protocol, by hot-mix saponification in a steam boiler followed by slow maturation in temperature-controlled tanks.
