Product Overview

The Parker Ivory Marbled Handle Black Badger Shaving Brush sets a 22 mm long loft black badger knot into an ivory marbled handle on a heavyweight chrome base and is supplied with an acrylic stand in a gift box.

Black badger is the stiffest badger grade, so the brush has plenty of backbone for working a hard soap. At 22 mm the knot holds more water and lather than the common 20 mm size, and the chrome base brings the brush to a published weight of 6 ounces, which keeps it steady in the hand.

Lathering Performance

Black badger is the stiffest and coarsest of the badger grades. The extra backbone means the brush lifts soap out of a hard puck without going limp, and the firmer tips give a scrubbier feel on the face than pure or silvertip hair. The long loft on this 22 mm knot lets the bristles splay over the soap as they load, and the larger knot holds enough lather for several passes.

Who This Brush Is Best For

Firm feel preference
Black badger has more backbone than the softer badger grades.
Bowl latherers
A 22 mm long loft knot holds enough lather for several passes.
Weighted handles
The chrome base brings the brush to a published 6 ounces.

Getting the Best from Your Brush

  1. Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two before you start, then shake out the excess.
  2. Load the brush by working it over the soap or cream until the hair is fully charged.
  3. Build the lather in a bowl or on the face, adding water a little at a time until it turns glossy.
  4. Give a new brush several shaves to break in before judging how it loads and how soft it feels.

Adding water gradually rather than all at once is the usual difference between a thin lather and a thick one.

Care and Storage

Rinse the knot thoroughly under warm running water after every shave until the water runs clear, then shake out the excess and stand the brush bristles down so it can dry. Avoid boiling water, harsh detergents and leaving the brush sitting wet in an enclosed space. Do not stand the brush on its knot to dry. The acrylic stand holds the brush knot down between shaves so water drains away from the base of the knot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the knot?
The knot is 22 mm, a little larger than the common 20 mm all round size. It holds more water and lather, which suits bowl lathering and longer multi pass shaves.
How heavy is the brush?
Parker publishes a brush weight of 6 ounces and an overall height of 4.25 in. The weight comes from the chrome base of the handle.
What is black badger hair?
Black badger is the stiffest and coarsest of the badger grades. It has more backbone than pure or silvertip, so it lifts soap out of a hard puck easily and gives a firmer feel on the face.
Can I use this brush with both soap and cream?
Yes. Black badger works with hard soaps, soft soaps and creams, and can be used for bowl lathering or face lathering.
How do I prepare the brush before shaving?
Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two, then shake out the excess water before loading your soap or cream.
Will a new brush shed hairs?
A few loose hairs in the first several uses are normal for a natural hair brush and usually stop on their own. Heavy shedding that continues is not normal.
How should the brush be dried?
Rinse the knot thoroughly, shake out the water and stand the brush bristles down so air can circulate. Do not store it wet in a closed cabinet or a sealed travel tube.
Does a new badger brush have a smell?
New natural hair brushes can carry a faint animal smell for the first few washes. Lathering the brush with soap several times and rinsing well normally clears it.

This was a big step up from my previous (Tweezerman) brush that was given to me as a present. It’s so comfortable and the weight feels substantial in my hands. The marbling is truly beautiful and goes well with the chrome and black for an elegant contrast. There is a noticeable animal-smell when you first wet it after buying, but goes away after only a few uses. The bristles separate more when lathering than I am used to with my old brush, but it also feels smoother and it doesn’t seem to affect my lathering negatively – I still get a better lather with this. My only complaint is that my older holder doesn’t really hold it right, something about the balance makes it rotate strangely hang downwards. I think it’s the smooth marble and weighting doesn’t generate enough friction for my older holder to grip it. Not a biggie. I have it in a different stand at my GFs home and it fits that perfectly. Wish I’d known about how nice these brushes are earlier. I would have bought it a long time ago.

Soft bristles make a rich lather. Shaving is enjoyable again. Really like the weight and feel of the handle.
