Tallow N.1 is the soap that named the maker’s tallow line. The Goodfellas’ Smile introduced it with the words that it wanted to focus on an ingredient it had never used before, and the scent it wrapped around it is the most floral in the range.

Ylang, a green note, cassis and fig open it, a full bouquet of rose, heliotrope, jasmine and orange blossom fills the heart, and cedarwood, amber and musk anchor it. The maker classes the fragrance as oriental-floral and calls the soap a 100 percent Italian craft product. Tallow is animal fat, so it is not suitable for vegans. 100 ml.

What This Soap Does

Tallow is the traditional base for shaving soap, and it is traditional because it works: rendered animal fat builds a dense, slick lather with a cushion that vegetable bases have spent decades trying to match.

The Goodfellas’ Smile makes most of its range on a vegetable formula and keeps a small tallow collection alongside it. This is one of the tallow ones, and the maker says so plainly rather than burying it. If that matters to you in either direction, it is settled before you order.

How To Lather It

Wet the brush and shake off the excess, then roll it over the surface of the soap for 25 to 30 seconds, pressing gently. Build the lather in a bowl or straight on the face with circular movements, adding water a little at a time as the soap asks for it.

A tallow soap rewards patience: keep the brush moving and add water a little at a time rather than all at once.

Care and Storage

Let the surface dry before closing the tub, and keep it out of standing water. Kept dry, a tub of shaving soap lasts through a very large number of shaves.
