Description

Product Overview

Urban Woods is Taconic’s modern barbershop scent. On the stick, Taconic describes it as an Urban Woods scent with hints of cedar, tobacco and bergamot. Taconic also notes its palm oil is sourced from RSPO suppliers.

It is a 2.5 oz. stick in an applicator that twists up from the bottom, the travel format of Taconic’s shaving soap. The published ingredient list matches Taconic’s 4 oz. soap pucks; what changes is the format, with the soap rubbed straight onto the wet beard and the lather built on the face. Handmade in upstate New York.

What This Stick Does

A shave stick strips the mug out of the process. The soap rubs straight onto the wet beard, the brush works over the face rather than a bowl, and the lather is built exactly where it is used, which is why sticks travel so well.

Taconic states its shaving soap creates an incredible lather and provides a smooth and slick shaving experience, that it conditions, moisturizes and protects the face from razor irritation while softening the beard, that it suits all skin types including sensitive skin, and that the stick is highly concentrated, so one lasts a long time. Those are Taconic’s descriptions of its own soap.

Who This Is Best For

Travellers
A solid soap in a capped stick, with no bowl, tub or bottle to manage.
Face latherers
The lather is built on the face by design, not in a mug.
Sensitive skin
Taconic states the soap suits all skin types, including sensitive skin.

How To Use It

Taconic’s own directions: wet your face and rub the soap generously over the beard, twisting the dial at the bottom of the container to dispense it. Then build the lather on your face with a wet shaving brush.

The stick dispenses like a deodorant stick, so nothing but the soap touches your hands, and there is no mug to rinse afterwards. Taconic adds that it travels easily and is TSA compliant.

Care and Storage

Let the exposed soap dry before capping the stick, and keep it somewhere it will not sit in water. There is nothing in it that needs refrigerating or special handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it smell like?
Taconic describes it as an Urban Woods scent with hints of cedar, tobacco and bergamot.
How is it different from the puck?
Same published ingredient list as Taconic’s 4 oz. shaving soap pucks, different format. The puck lives in a mug and is lathered there; the stick rubs directly onto the wet beard and the brush builds the lather on your face. Taconic makes both.
What is in it?
As published by Taconic: Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Safflower Oil, Olive Oil (Grade A extra virgin), Castor Oil, Glycerin (kosher, of vegetable origin), Hemp Seed Oil (unrefined), Purified Water, Sodium Hydroxide (saponifying agent), Sorbitol (moisturizer), Bentonite Clay (humectant), Sorbitan Oleate (emulsifier), Soybean Protein (conditioner), Wheat Protein (conditioner), and Essential Oils.
Do I need a brush?
Yes. Taconic’s directions are to rub the stick over the wet beard and then build the lather on your face with a wet shaving brush. There is no brushless route published for the stick.
How long does it last?
Taconic describes the stick as highly concentrated and states that one stick lasts a long time. At 2.5 oz. it is smaller than the 4 oz. puck, but nothing is lost to a mug or rinsed away.
Can I fly with it?
Taconic states the stick travels easily and is TSA compliant: it is a solid soap, not a liquid or gel. Check the current rules for the razor and blades separately, since those are the restricted part of a travel kit.
How big is it?
2.5 oz., as published by Taconic.
Where is it made?
The USA. Taconic states the soap is handmade in upstate New York.

Been wet shaving a while- SOLD on shave sticks!

the eucalyptus/mint is fantastic and the ingredients feel super nice. The shave stick makes it easy to apply (and carry on travel) and the frsutration of making the foam nice and thick on my face is no longer a problem. Shave stick does the best job.

I tried another shave stick at the same time (Cremo) and gave that away within a week. This have stick stays firm and doesn’t get too soft and melt away quickly in a hot shower (where i shave). LOVE THIS and will keep buying it whenever it runs out (it’ll take some time).

Ce savon est l’un des meilleurs que j’ai testé. Il produit une mousse dense très facilement. Je l’utilise avec un DE er un rasoir droit. Par contre il est arrivé avec le contenant cassé. Le vendeur a été très pro. Parfait !

I’ve used more or less the full gamut of quality shave soaps (Proraso, Mitchell’s Wool Fat, Cade, DR Harris, Tabac, Pre de Provence, among many others). In terms of lathering and lubrication, this product from Taconic absolutely holds its own. As a face latherer, I love the retractable shave stick format and wish more shave soap makers used this format. However, I would also say that this product’s scent and packaging do not feel as premium as some other products at a similar price point. The plastic tube feels a bit cheap and the scent is very mild and “blah”. But, like I said, from a lathering and lubrication perspective, an excellent product for everyday use.

Been shaving for decades. Tried foams, gels, brushes with soaps and multiple shaving sticks – the Taconic soap stick beats them all hands down! I personally find the name and packaging are not wonderful but the stick itself beats others twice its price. Once on a trip to London I spend a whole morning looking for a Shavings shop in order to buy a particular brand I had read about – Tactonic beats it believe me!

This gives a very nice shave, and is very long lasting. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because I was expecting a menthol blast, but there is none. It has a pleasant scent that reminds me of spearmint gum, plus it lathers up quite nicely. Shaves are smooth and friction-less. Have been using mine for about 2 months and its only about 50% gone. So long lasting as well.

I wish this brand had a shave stick with menthol as an ingredient.

If a menthol kick isn’t important to you, then please consider this a 5 star product.

Love how easy it is to lather. Put it on your face and hit it with a brush. Too easy.

This is a great travel shave product. It’s a solid stick, so just wet the shave area and rub this on the area like a lip-balm, then work into a lather.

I like how easy this stick soap is to use. I just run hot water over the end and scrub it into my beard. Then I use a badger brush soaked in hot water and work it into a nice lasting lather. The scent is different but still a bay rum and is nicely mild.

Lathers up nicely with a fresh peppermint scent. Great for travel.
