What This Oil Does

A pre-shave oil is insurance under the lather. It lays a slick layer between the blade and the skin before the soap goes on, so the razor slides over skin that would otherwise take the friction directly.

Taconic states the oil is designed to protect and lubricate the skin from repeated razor contact, that it softens stubborn hairs, helps prevent skin rashes, bumps and razor burn, and improves the quality of the shave. Those are Taconic’s descriptions of its own oil.

Who This Is Best For

Irritation-prone skin
An extra layer between blade and skin, which is the whole point of a pre-shave.
Tough stubble
Taconic states it softens stubborn hairs before the lather goes on.
Scent-free routines
Unscented by design, so your soap or aftershave carries the fragrance.

How To Use It

Taconic’s direction: apply it as a first layer before your shave cream or soap. Work a few drops over the wet shave area, then lather on top of it as usual.

It is unscented, so it pairs with any of Taconic’s soaps or creams without changing how they smell.

Care and Storage

Keep the bottle capped and upright, out of direct sunlight. Nothing in it needs refrigerating or special handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it have a scent?
No. It is unscented by design, which is also Taconic’s printed name for it. The lime oil in the list is not enough to carry a scent through a lather.
What is in it?
As published by Taconic: carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, vitis vinifera (grape seed) oil, citrus latifolia tanaka (lime) oil, and tocopherol (vitamin E), with the safflower, castor and grape seed oils marked organic.
How do I use it?
As a first layer before the shave cream or soap, which is Taconic’s own direction. A few drops over the wet shave area, then build your lather on top.
Does it actually help?
Taconic states it protects and lubricates the skin from repeated razor contact, softens stubborn hairs, helps prevent rashes, bumps and razor burn, and improves the quality of the shave. Those are Taconic’s claims for its own oil.
Will it clog my razor?
A few drops under a proper lather is the published method. Rinse the blade as you normally would; the oil is there to lubricate the skin, not to replace the lather.
Can women use it?
Yes. It is unscented, and Taconic itself lists this oil in its For Her range as well.
How big is the bottle?
2 oz., as published by Taconic.
Where is it made?
The USA, as Taconic states.

I shave in the shower. I’ve shied away from oils in favor of other pre-shave products because the oil would hang around on the floor of the shower and would need to be specifically washed away. That was annoying enough, but they didn’t seem to help out much.

This is a good quality pre-shave oil. I get nice results with it. This oil doesn’t travel around and get all over the place – including the floor. It’s almost sticky by comparison and stays on your hands so you can apply it to your face.

My only complaint is the squirt bottle is kind of wonky and I have to

This is my new favorite pre-shave product. Does a great job staying where it has been applied and lubricates the shave area well.
