Description

Product Overview

The Rex Ambassador is an adjustable double edge safety razor machined from marine grade stainless steel by Rex Supply Co. in the USA. The blade gap is set with an integrated dial rather than being fixed, so one razor covers a range of settings.

Rex publishes an adjustment range of 0.012 in to 0.052 in (0.30 mm to 1.32 mm), marked as 13 settings from 0.5 to 6.5, with the adjustment infinite between the marks. At the low end the razor presents very little blade, and at the high end it presents considerably more.

Rex publishes a length of 3.5 in (89 mm) and a weight of 3.73 oz (106 g). Every Ambassador carries an individual serial number and a manufacturing code, and Rex covers it with a lifetime warranty. Rex states that the razor is compatible with any double edge blade. Rex does not publish a piece count or a comb type for the Ambassador, so neither is stated here.

Adjustable Head and Blade Changes

The Ambassador is adjustable rather than fixed. The blade gap can be set anywhere from 0.012 in to 0.052 in (0.30 mm to 1.32 mm), so the same razor can be set close for a light pass or opened up for heavier growth.

The setting is changed with the integrated dial. Rex marks 13 settings from 0.5 to 6.5 and describes the adjustment as infinite between them, so the dial can also be left between marks. The setting can be changed at any time, including part way through a shave.

Who This Razor ts Best For

Shavers who want one razor to cover several settings
The dial spans 0.012 in to 0.052 in, so the gap can be changed for the pass or for the day.
Shavers who want a stainless steel razor to keep
Rex machines the Ambassador from marine grade stainless steel and covers it with a lifetime warranty.
Shavers who already have blades they like
No blades are included, so you can load whichever brand you already use.

Weight and Shaving Feel

At 3.73 oz (106 g) over a length of 3.5 in (89 mm) the Ambassador sits toward the heavier end of the double edge range, and much of what the razor does is governed by the dial setting rather than by pressure from the hand.

How a razor feels is subjective and varies from one shaver to another. Beard type, blade choice, lather and technique all affect the result, so treat these descriptions as a general guide rather than a promise about your own shave.

Getting the Best from Your Razor

  1. Prepare the skin first. Many shavers find a hot shower or a warm damp towel before the shave makes a difference.
  2. Build lather with a shave soap or cream. A shave brush lifts the hair and spreads the lather more evenly.
  3. Let the razor do the work and apply very little pressure. Hold the head at a shallow angle to the skin rather than pressing it flat.
  4. Take the first pass with the grain, then reduce further on later passes if you want to.
  5. Rinse the head under running water between passes rather than tapping the razor on the sink.
  6. Change the blade once it starts to feel rough or drag. Blade life varies between individuals.

Care and Storage

Rinse the razor under warm running water after every shave and shake the water off. Take the head off from time to time and rinse the head and the handle threads so that soap does not build up, and run water through the adjustment mechanism. Dry the razor and leave it where air can reach it rather than in a closed cabinet or a sealed travel tube.

Marine grade stainless steel is solid metal rather than a plated finish, so there is no coating to wear through, but the threads and the adjustment mechanism still need rinsing so that soap does not build up in them.

Keep unused blades dry and stored in their original packaging. Place used blades in a sealed Razor Blade Bank or another puncture-resistant container. Never place loose blades directly in household trash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this razor come with blades?
Yes: Wish4Blades adds one pack of five Parker double edge blades. It takes standard double edge blades, so refills can be whichever brand suits you.
Which blades fit the Rex Ambassador? tt uses standard double edge razor blades. Brands differ in sharpness and smoothness, so a sampler pack is a practical way to work out which one suits you.
How does the blade setting work?
The integrated dial changes the blade gap. Rex publishes a range of 0.012 in to 0.052 in (0.30 mm to 1.32 mm) across 13 marked settings from 0.5 to 6.5, with the adjustment infinite between the marks. Lower numbers set a smaller gap and higher numbers a larger one.
How do t change the blade safely?
Follow the blade loading method for your razor and keep your fingers away from the edges of the blade. Tip the used blade straight into a blade bank rather than picking it up with your fingers, rinse the head, then set the new blade in place and close the razor fully before shaving.
How heavy is the Rex Ambassador?
Rex publishes a weight of 3.73 oz (106 g) and a length of 3.5 in (89 mm) for the Ambassador.
Which setting should t start on?
There is no single correct answer and it depends on your beard, your skin and your technique. Many shavers start at a low setting, shave with it for several days, and move up only if they want more from each pass. Nothing about the razor requires you to use the higher settings.
How many shaves should t get from a blade?
This varies from person to person and depends on beard type, preparation and blade brand. Change the blade once it starts to feel rough or drag over the skin.
Can t take it in hand luggage?
Before travelling, check the current airline and airport-security rules for carrying razor blades. Never pack the razor with a blade loaded.
How should used blades be discarded?
Place used blades in a sealed Razor Blade Bank or another puncture-resistant container. Never place loose blades directly in household trash.

    Rex Ambassador is a winner

I don’t usually leave reviews but omg this razor is amazing. The quality of the shave and quality of the razor itself is just top notch. My only complaint is that I didn’t buy it sooner.. Great job Matt & team!

Having only been using the Rex for about 12 days I think my impressions of the rzaor at this point can best be characterized as preliminary. Looking at the objective criteria 1) the construction of this razor is first rate. It is a solidly built and well thought out piece. Water can drain from the blade through the body of the handle out from a hole at the bottom of the handle. Even though the hole doubles as a way for its companion stand to be inserted for the razor to be upright when not in use, the hole serves a dual purpose. 2) the knurling is exceptional. I tried getting my hand as slippery as possible before using it and it simply won’t slide around in your hand. Its like driving with studded snow tires (outlawed now?) 3) it has weight. The weight feels balanced in my hand, unlike the Viking Emperor Meiji which was handle heavy and always felt like it was dragging my hand down. 3) the adjustability of the razor is not tied into the numbers and half markers; it is not a click and hold adjustment but adjusts as you turn, whether a full half between the numbers or a complete turn from one number to another. This allows a maximum group of blade exposure settings from 1/2 to 6. 4) I purchased the standard stainless finish and the cap is smooth with a solid safety bar. As long as my face was properly moist I did not feel tugging or pulling of the cap as some users of the Rockwell 6S note in its SS standard finish. 5) although there is considerable adjustability of blade gap, blade exosure is fixed, which I measured as 1/16,” which is quite a lot when you compare it to something like the Henson AL13 and I think this exposure impacts how the razor feels when shaving. Thus, the more difficult subjective evaluation of how does the razor shave is fraught with variables and as such, is only applicable to me. My first few shaves with the Rex were not very pleasant and I attributed this to my very poor technique as I am a newbie to DE wet shaving; having onlly started doing so since June 16 of this year. Once I read some blogs and saw some illustrations of what it means to “ride the cap” for a smoother shave I started cutting and nicking myself less and enjoying the shave more. I do like a bit of blade feel but initially the Rex felt so powerful that even slight pressure, coupled with the rather copious amount of blade exposure, regardless of blade gap caused me to cut myself. So dialing down to between 1 and 2.5 seemed to give me decent blade feel without reducing my face to looking like I ran into concertina wire. And as you all in the wet shave community know, the blade you use is crucial to the overall feel of the razor as well. So what’s the bottom line? You’re definitely paying a premium price but you are getting a lifetime warranty premium product that, with considerable adjustability will allow you to experient with different blades so that you can find your ideal combination of aggressiveness and smoothness. Essentially you have the equivalent of multiple safety razors all rolled into one. So, for all of you who have RAD, possibly the Ambassador might, just might cure you of the virus. ?

    Polished Only Rex Ambassador

If you want to just sit down with a beautiful razor, and admire its craftsmanship, stylish curves and beautiful symmetry, look no further than the Rex Ambassador. The Ambassador is not only very handsome and pleasing to the eye, but it also feels great in the hand with superb knurling for a firm grip. The price point is a bit high for a razor, but if you can afford it, and want the best money can buy, and want to thoroughly enjoy your shaving experience, look no further than the Rex Ambassador. Thank you Matt at Razor Emporium for creating an extremely handsome razor that performs as well as it is beautiful. I look forward to every shave knowing I will be shaving with my new Ambassador! Quick delivery and excellent customer service was appreciated as well! Only wish a polishing cloth had been provided with such an expensive purchase, and certainly believe one should be provided at this price point.

    Rex Ambassador!!!

All of the great comments are true! I went back & fourth between purchasing the Ambassador or the Blackland Osprey, but after watching several shaving videos. I decided to get the Ambassador and I am glad I did!!! I have been using it for the past two weeks, trying all of the settings and it is fabulous! All settings are great. My favorite setting is #5. I have several high end razors, but if I could only choose one it would be the Ambassador! If you want it, just get it!

    Great razor

This razor is amazing. I first shaved with it on 5 which was too much for me. I also didn’t like the blade feel because I thought it was too much. But then I tried it on 3 and it’s super comfortable and it does a great job on 3. I actually did a head shave with 7 days of growth and it took it off so easily on number 4. I was leary at first but I love this razor. It feels very well built and feels awesome in the hand. I like the balance point and one of my favorite things is how easy it is to hold with slippery fingers. The adjustment works as it should and is smooth. I’d buy it again for sure.

    Rex Ambassador

This razor is fantastic. I’m learning to appreciate it more and more every week, it seems. When I first received it 3 years ago, I found it almost too aggressive, but now that I have learned the right angle, I am getting the closest shaves ever. The new Rex Konsul has the possibility of knocking the Ambassador back to second place in my collection, we shall see.

    Rex ambassador with gold finish

Finish was perfect and this is the best shave from and adjustable I have ever had. I spent money on cheaper razors, but the quality really shines in this razor. This is top of the line and very happy I got it. Also big thanks to razor emporium a pleasure to deal with and fabulous customer service!

    Impressive design and quality

I’ve been using the Ambassador for face and head shaves, and it is impressive. Setting 1 or 2 for head shaves ensures I don’t cut myself to shreds since I’m a beginner DE razor guy. Setting 3 is perfect for daily shaves, and the other day I used setting 6 to effortlessly remove a week of beard growth. Personna Comfort Coated blades have been serving me well, but I will probably purchase a sample blade pack to see what others are like. The design and craftsmanship are impressive. Just a really really great American made razor. Worth every penny.

    Excellent quality. Timeless. High efficiency!

I wasn’t sure about this razor. It is pricy. But I was drawn to it because it is machined in the town I live in. I knew that the quality would be unmatched. I was apprehensive because people said it was aggressive. It is but It is built for a one pass shave. My mild razors take about two passes usually. I do have sensitive skin so I started on the lowest setting(0.5). I got a smooth and efficient shave with one pass while mapping out my beard. I got a small cut but no big deal. My usual trouble spots did not get irritated(around adams apple). One pass was all I needed and my shave looked gorgeous! It is adjustable for a reason. Do not expect to need every setting. in my opinion the higher settings are made for several days of heavy growth. If you have a lighter beard like me a one pass shave on 0.5 or 1 should be sufficient enough. It is the most beautiful and functional razor I have ever owned. Well worth the price of admission. Very useful if I am in a hurry in the morning because you really only need one pass. You are not meant to use every setting. This razor is meant for one pass and to adapt to your skin and your beard. I find that this razor performs better than the vintage super adjustable I tried. Great job matt! Thank you for creating a razor setting for me and my beard!

    Rex Ambassador

I’ve had the Ambassador for about a month, I want to use the razor a lot before I gave my review. I have a 6s & CG.76 as my other razors but the Rex Ambassador is my favorite, I shave daily except on my weekends. The Rex does have a lot blade feel, my daily settings is 2 and setting 5 is the highest I’ve used. I do recommend this razor if someone likes their razors with a healthy amount of blade feel. The razor itself is flawless and the shipping was quick.

    Highly Recommend!

I daily shave one WTG pass on setting 6.5, the shave is unmatched. I have course hair and sensitive skin, with a well hydrated lather this razor glides leaving behind little to no irritation. It does have positive blade feel but again, with a well hydrated lather I hardly ever nick myself. The build is top notch and with gold plating this thing is mesmerizing to look at. A second in a different finish will be in my future. I wish Rex had an “Ambassador” program as I’d be prepared to do any and all advertising for them.

    Rex Ambassador

After two hurricanes flooded my home in two weeks the clean up crew stole all my De razors. All I had left was a Rockwell T2SS. A very nice razor. The new Rex Ambassador arrived the other day. O my god did I miss that razor. I feel it is one of the best razors on the market. Four months was too long to go without a great shave.
