Description

Product Overview

Pino Alpestre is the cold one. Pine and eucalyptus over an aldehydic, camphorous top, ylang ylang and violet in the heart, and a woody base with tonka bean and musk.

The cold is not just a scent impression. Menthol and camphor are both in the published ingredient list, which no other soap in this range contains. It is otherwise the AJ-1 vegetable formula: four pure oils at more than 35 percent of the total, hot saponified. 100 ml.

What This Soap Does

A shaving soap has one job: hold water in a lather stable enough that the razor glides instead of scraping. Everything else is how it gets there. The Goodfellas’ Smile builds its AJ-1 soaps on four pure oils rather than on cheap filler, and hot-saponifies them.

The maker leaves added glycerin out of the AJ-1 formula, which has a practical consequence at the sink: it wants more water than a standard soap before it opens up. The maker attributes hydration, protection, elasticity and smoothness to the oil content. That is the maker’s claim about its own formula rather than a promise from us.

Who This Is Best For

Cooling lather
The only soap here with menthol and camphor published.
Hot weather
Alpine pine and eucalyptus, cold on the face.
Vegetable formulas
Four pure oils, no animal-derived ingredient published.

How To Lather It

Wet the brush and shake off the excess, then roll it over the surface of the soap for 25 to 30 seconds, pressing gently. Build the lather in a bowl or straight on the face with circular movements, adding water a little at a time as the soap asks for it.

The AJ-1 formula has no added glycerin and the maker notes it wants more water than standard. If the lather looks tight, add water rather than more soap.

Care and Storage

Let the surface dry before closing the tub, and keep it out of standing water. Kept dry, a tub of shaving soap lasts through a very large number of shaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it smell like?
Pine, eucalyptus and an aldehydic, camphorous lift at the top, ylang ylang and violet in the heart, and a base of woody notes, tonka bean and musk.
Is this a soap or a cream?
Both words are correct, and the confusion is the maker’s own. Barbieri Uniti titles these products shaving cream, then calls the same product a shaving soap in its own lathering instructions on the same page. What is in the jar is a soft shaving soap: too firm to squeeze from a tube, soft enough to load in half a minute with a wet brush. Buy it expecting a soap in a tub.
Is it suitable for vegans?
The maker calls this its AJ-1 vegetable formula and publishes no animal-derived ingredient in the list. We do not print the word vegan on it, because the maker does not use that word about its own product and we will not put a claim in its mouth. If you avoid animal ingredients, the published list is above in full.
What is in it?
As published by the maker: Aqua (Water), Stearic Acid, Cocos Nucifera Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Parfum (Fragrance), Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Menthol, Camphor, Geraniol, Limonene. Note that menthol and camphor are both in the published list, which is why this soap feels cold on the face.
How do I lather it?
Wet the brush and shake off the excess, then roll it over the surface of the soap for 25 to 30 seconds, pressing gently. Build the lather in a bowl or straight on the face with circular movements, adding water a little at a time as the soap asks for it.
Why does this one feel cold?
Because of the formula, not the scent alone. Menthol and camphor both appear in the published ingredient list for Pino Alpestre and in no other soap in this range. It is a real cooling effect on the skin rather than a suggestion made by pine.
How big is the tub?
100 ml. Used with a brush a tub of this size covers many months of daily shaving, because each load takes very little.
Where is it made?
Italy. The Goodfellas’ Smile is produced by Barbieri Uniti S.r.l., which publishes the formula and ingredients for each soap in the range.
