The Parker Big Brown Boar Shave Brush sets a large 24 mm deluxe boar knot into a long iridescent tortoise resin handle and is supplied with an acrylic stand in a gift box.

The handle is long at 66 mm, which brings the brush to 123 mm overall and keeps your grip above the rim when you lather in a deep bowl or mug. A 24 mm boar knot on a 57 mm loft holds a generous amount of lather.

Lathering Performance

Boar bristle is stiff when it is new and softens as it is used. The tips split over the first few weeks of shaving, and as they do the knot becomes softer against the face and holds more lather. Boar keeps more backbone than badger throughout its life, which is why it lifts soap out of a hard puck so easily. At 24 mm on a 57 mm loft the knot carries enough lather for several passes.

Getting the Best from Your Brush

1. Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two before you start, then shake out the excess.
2. Load the brush by working it over the soap or cream until the hair is fully charged.
3. Build the lather in a bowl or on the face, adding water a little at a time until it turns glossy.
4. Give a new boar brush a few weeks of regular use to break in. The tips split as the brush is used, which makes it noticeably softer and better at holding lather.

Adding water gradually rather than all at once is the usual difference between a thin lather and a thick one.

Care and Storage

Rinse the knot thoroughly under warm running water after every shave until the water runs clear, then shake out the excess and stand the brush bristles down so it can dry. Avoid boiling water, harsh detergents and leaving the brush sitting wet in an enclosed space. Do not stand the brush on its knot to dry. The acrylic stand holds the brush knot down between shaves so water drains away from the base of the knot.
