The 71R is a three-piece razor, not a butterfly. The head unscrews into a top cap, a base plate and a handle, the blade sits between them, and everything screws back together. It is the oldest and simplest double edge design there is, and it gives the most direct feel for how the blade is sitting.

Parker lists it with a genuine brass frame in a graphite and chrome plating, 3.75 in. overall and 2.9 oz. The set adds a 22 mm pure badger brush on a resin handle and a chrome stand for both.

What This Set Does

A three-piece razor asks slightly more of you at blade change and gives slightly more back in feel. Because you seat the blade yourself between the cap and the base plate, you learn very quickly how square the blade is sitting, and nothing about the head can drift out of alignment over time the way a hinged mechanism eventually can.

A stand keeps the razor or brush organized and allows a rinsed brush to dry in an open, ventilated position between shaves. That is the practical job it does: everything has a place, nothing is left lying on a wet counter, and the brush sits in the open air rather than on a shelf.

Getting Started

Rest the base plate on the handle, lay the blade on the posts, set the cap on top and screw the handle home finger tight. Overtightening is the one thing to avoid.

A new badger knot may shed a few hairs over the first several uses. That settles down.

Care and Storage

Rinse the razor after every shave and take it apart from time to time so soap does not build up in the threads. Rinse the brush until the water runs clear, squeeze gently rather than wringing it, and hang it on the stand to dry.

Keep unused blades dry and stored in their original packaging. Place used blades in a sealed Razor Blade Bank or another puncture-resistant container. Never place loose blades directly in household trash.
