Product Overview

The Taconic Shave Wood and Chrome Mixed Badger Shave Brush sets a dense 22 mm mixed badger knot into a durable beechwood and chrome handle and is supplied with a Lucite stand in a gift box.

Mixed badger blends badger grades in one knot, which gives the brush more backbone than a soft silvertip while keeping a reasonable feel on the face. A 22 mm knot holds a good volume of water and lather, which suits bowl lathering and longer multi pass shaves.

Lathering Performance

Mixed badger blends badger grades in a single knot. The result has more backbone than a soft silvertip, so it lifts soap out of a hard puck readily, while still holding a useful volume of water. The dense 22 mm knot releases lather steadily through a multi pass shave.

Who This Brush Is Best For

Firm feel preference
Mixed badger keeps more backbone than the softer badger grades.
Bowl latherers
A dense 22 mm knot holds enough lather for several passes.
Wood handle preference
The beechwood and chrome handle is a change from moulded resin.

Getting the Best from Your Brush

  1. Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two before you start, then shake out the excess.
  2. Load the brush by working it over the soap or cream until the hair is fully charged.
  3. Build the lather in a bowl or on the face, adding water a little at a time until it turns glossy.
  4. Give a new brush several shaves to break in before judging how it loads and how soft it feels.

Adding water gradually rather than all at once is the usual difference between a thin lather and a thick one.

Care and Storage

Rinse the knot thoroughly under warm running water after every shave until the water runs clear, then shake out the excess and stand the brush bristles down so it can dry. Avoid boiling water, harsh detergents and leaving the brush sitting wet in an enclosed space. Do not stand the brush on its knot to dry. The Lucite stand holds the brush knot down between shaves so water drains away from the base of the knot. Dry the wooden section of the handle as well rather than leaving it standing in water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the knot?
The knot is 22 mm, a little larger than the common 20 mm all round size. It holds more water and lather, which suits bowl lathering and longer multi pass shaves.
What is mixed badger hair?
Mixed badger blends more than one grade of badger hair in the same knot. It sits between the coarse black badger grade and the softer pure and silvertip grades in both feel and backbone.
How does mixed badger compare with pure badger?
Mixed badger generally has a firmer feel and a little more backbone than pure badger, which some shavers prefer for working hard soaps. Pure badger feels softer on the face.
Can I use this brush with both soap and cream?
Yes. Mixed badger works with hard soaps, soft soaps and creams, and can be used for bowl lathering or face lathering.
How do I prepare the brush before shaving?
Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two, then shake out the excess water before loading your soap or cream.
Will a new brush shed hairs?
A few loose hairs in the first several uses are normal for a natural hair brush and usually stop on their own. Heavy shedding that continues is not normal.
How should the brush be dried?
Rinse the knot thoroughly, shake out the water and stand the brush bristles down so air can circulate. Do not store it wet in a closed cabinet or a sealed travel tube.
Does a new badger brush have a smell?
New natural hair brushes can carry a faint animal smell for the first few washes. Lathering the brush with soap several times and rinsing well normally clears it.

Really like this brush! It is DENSELY compacted with hairs! You are definitely getting your money’s worth. When you first get it the tips of the hair won’t feel overly soft but you just need to break it in or use it for 5-10 shaves and you will feel like it is 10 years old. The handle is hefty but I really like it for grip!

Update: this brush can hold so much lather! When you’re using a soft cream or something you will lather in a bowl, go lighter than you think on the cream, you will not have any trouble having enough for 3 passes!

The brush is great. Great lather. I was using my step-grandfather’s synthetic brush. But it was worn out. The travel issue is not the brush’s fault. It is just IMO; Brush & bowl/coffee cup shaving cream system is not really made for traveling.
