Description

Product Overview

Arabica is the coffee bar. Espresso grounds collected from a cafe in Mile End give it the scrub, and the scent is eucalyptus, bitter orange and coffee: sharp and waking rather than sweet.

It is cold-saponified and over-greased with shea butter, so it is naturally rich in glycerine and does not strip the skin the way a hard scrub bar usually does. 140 g.

Key Features

  • Espresso coffee grounds for a real scrub, collected from a Mile End cafe

What This Soap Does

Cold-process saponification is the slow way to make soap, and the reason to bother is glycerine. Glycerine draws water to the skin, and it is naturally produced during saponification. Industrial processes strip it out and sell it separately; cold process leaves it in the bar.

GROOM then superfats the bars with shea butter, which means adding more fat than the lye can convert. What is left over stays in the finished soap as free oil, and that is what stops a hard bar feeling stripping.

Who This Is Best For

Morning showers
Coffee, eucalyptus and bitter orange to wake you up.
Scrub bars
Real espresso grounds rather than plastic beads.
Made locally
Handmade in Montreal, with grounds from a Mile End cafe.

How To Use It

Wet the bar and work it into a lather in the hands or straight onto damp skin. Rinse and leave the bar somewhere it can drain rather than sitting in water.

A cold-process bar lasts far longer if it dries between uses. A draining dish is the single thing that makes the difference.

Care and Storage

Keep the bar out of standing water and let it dry between uses. Stored dry, an unused bar keeps for a long time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it smell like?
Eucalyptus, bitter orange and coffee. GROOM calls it refreshing, and it reads sharp rather than sweet.
How rough is the scrub?
It is a real exfoliant. GROOM describes light exfoliation from espresso coffee grounds, so it has grit where the other bars in the range do not.
Where do the coffee grounds come from?
GROOM collects them from a cafe in Mile End, Montreal.
What is in it?
Cocos Nucifera Oil, Olea Europaea Fruit Oil, Aqua, Sodium Hydroxide, Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil, Ricinus Communis Seed Oil, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter, Kaolin, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Citrus Limon Fruit Oil, Coffea Arabica Seed Powder, Sodium Lactate, Salvia Sclarea Oil, Juniperus Mexicana Oil, Piper Nigrum Fruit Oil, Cedrus Atlantica Bark Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia Peel Oil, Citrus Tangerina Peel Oil, Coffea Arabica Seed Oil, Citrus Paradisi Peel Oil, Coriandrum Sativum Fruit Oil, Ocimum Basilicum Herb Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil, Parfum of natural origin.
Is it drying?
GROOM over-greases the bar with shea butter and notes it is naturally rich in glycerin from the saponification process, which is what offsets the scrub.
How big is the bar?
140 g.
Can I use it on my face?
It is sold as a body soap. The espresso grounds make it a firmer scrub than most facial products, so judge it against your own skin.
Where is it made?
GROOM makes its products in-house at its Montreal workshop, and states that it has done so since 2013. GROOM describes its formulas as crafted from natural ingredients from renewable sources, and states that its products are not tested on animals. Since March 2021 GROOM has been certified plastic negative by a third party.
