Product Overview

The Taconic Shave Deluxe Pure Badger Shave Brush sets a 22 mm pure badger knot into a beechwood and chrome handle and is supplied with a Lucite stand in a gift box.

A 22 mm knot holds a good volume of water and lather, which suits bowl lathering and longer multi pass shaves. The wood and chrome handle puts weight low down, so the brush sits steady in the hand while you load the soap.

Lathering Performance

Pure badger is the standard grade of badger hair. It absorbs and holds water well, and the hair keeps enough backbone to lift soap out of a hard puck without going limp. A 22 mm knot holds a useful volume of lather, which suits building in a bowl and working through several passes.

Who This Brush Is Best For

Bowl latherers
A 22 mm knot holds enough lather for several passes.
Wood handle preference
The beechwood and chrome handle is a change from moulded resin.
Gift buyers
The brush arrives in a gift box with its stand.

Getting the Best from Your Brush

  1. Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two before you start, then shake out the excess.
  2. Load the brush by working it over the soap or cream until the hair is fully charged.
  3. Build the lather in a bowl or on the face, adding water a little at a time until it turns glossy.
  4. Give a new brush several shaves to break in before judging how it loads and how soft it feels.

Adding water gradually rather than all at once is the usual difference between a thin lather and a thick one.

Care and Storage

Rinse the knot thoroughly under warm running water after every shave until the water runs clear, then shake out the excess and stand the brush bristles down so it can dry. Avoid boiling water, harsh detergents and leaving the brush sitting wet in an enclosed space. Do not stand the brush on its knot to dry. The Lucite stand holds the brush knot down between shaves so water drains away from the base of the knot. Dry the wooden section of the handle as well rather than leaving it standing in water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the knot?
The knot is 22 mm, a little larger than the common 20 mm all round size. It holds more water and lather, which suits bowl lathering and longer multi pass shaves.
What is the handle made of?
The handle combines beechwood with a chrome section. Both add weight low in the handle, which helps the brush sit steady in the hand.
What is pure badger hair?
Pure badger is the standard grade of badger hair used in shaving brushes. It holds water well and has more backbone than the softer grades, which makes it straightforward to load soap and work up lather.
Can I use this brush with both soap and cream?
Yes. Pure badger works with hard soaps, soft soaps and creams, and can be used for bowl lathering or face lathering.
How do I prepare the brush before shaving?
Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two, then shake out the excess water before loading your soap or cream.
Will a new brush shed hairs?
A few loose hairs in the first several uses are normal for a natural hair brush and usually stop on their own. Heavy shedding that continues is not normal.
How should the brush be dried?
Rinse the knot thoroughly, shake out the water and stand the brush bristles down so air can circulate. Do not store it wet in a closed cabinet or a sealed travel tube.
Does a new badger brush have a smell?
New natural hair brushes can carry a faint animal smell for the first few washes. Lathering the brush with soap several times and rinsing well normally clears it.
