Lathering Performance

Best badger is the middle grade of badger hair. It absorbs and holds water well, softer against the face than pure badger while keeping more backbone than a silvertip knot, which is why the Commodore has long been the value choice in the Simpsons range. The 24 mm knot on a 46 mm loft loads a hard puck readily and releases lather steadily through a multi pass shave.

Getting the Best from Your Brush

  1. Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two before you start, then shake out the excess.
  2. Load the brush by working it over the soap or cream until the hair is fully charged.
  3. Build the lather in a bowl or on the face, adding water a little at a time until it turns glossy.
  4. Give a new brush several shaves to break in before judging how it loads and how soft it feels.

Adding water gradually rather than all at once is the usual difference between a thin lather and a thick one.

Care and Storage

Rinse the knot thoroughly under warm running water after every shave until the water runs clear, then shake out the excess and stand the brush bristles down so it can dry. Avoid boiling water, harsh detergents and leaving the brush sitting wet in an enclosed space. Do not stand the brush on its knot to dry. Soak the knot in warm water before the shave and keep the handle out of the water. Simpsons advise this for all their brushes, as it prolongs the life of the handle and the setting of the knot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the knot?
The knot is 24 mm with a 46 mm loft. The X3 is the largest of the three Commodore sizes.
What is best badger hair?
Best badger is the middle grade of badger hair. It is softer on the face than pure badger and holds more water, while keeping more backbone than the finer silvertip grades.
Who makes this brush?
Simpsons of England. Alexander Simpson began making shaving brushes in 1919 and the brushes are still made in England today.
Can I use this brush with both soap and cream?
Yes. Best badger works with hard soaps, soft soaps and creams, and can be used for bowl lathering or face lathering.
How do I prepare the brush before shaving?
Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two, then shake out the excess. Keep the handle out of the water; Simpsons advise this for all their brushes.
Will a new brush shed hairs?
A few loose hairs in the first several uses are normal for a natural hair brush and usually stop on their own. Heavy shedding that continues is not normal.
How should the brush be dried?
Rinse the knot thoroughly, shake out the water and stand the brush bristles down so air can circulate. Do not store it wet in a closed cabinet or a sealed travel tube.
Does a new badger brush have a smell?
New natural hair brushes can carry a faint animal smell for the first few washes. Lathering the brush with soap several times and rinsing well normally clears it.
