Product Overview
The Simpsons Commodore X3 sets a 24 mm best badger knot into the curved faux ivory Commodore handle. It is the largest of the three Commodore sizes.
Best badger sits between pure and silvertip: softer on the face than pure badger, with more backbone than silvertip and at a lower price. Simpsons publish a 46 mm loft on a 51 mm handle, 97 mm overall and 65 g. Simpsons have been making shaving brushes since Alexander Simpson started production in 1919, and the brushes are still made in England.

Lathering Performance
Best badger is the middle grade of badger hair. It absorbs and holds water well, softer against the face than pure badger while keeping more backbone than a silvertip knot, which is why the Commodore has long been the value choice in the Simpsons range. The 24 mm knot on a 46 mm loft loads a hard puck readily and releases lather steadily through a multi pass shave.
Who This Brush Is Best For
Best badger performance without silvertip pricing.
A 24 mm knot works in a bowl and on the face.
The curved faux ivory handle is a long standing Simpsons shape.
Getting the Best from Your Brush
- Soak the knot in warm water for a minute or two before you start, then shake out the excess.
- Load the brush by working it over the soap or cream until the hair is fully charged.
- Build the lather in a bowl or on the face, adding water a little at a time until it turns glossy.
- Give a new brush several shaves to break in before judging how it loads and how soft it feels.
Adding water gradually rather than all at once is the usual difference between a thin lather and a thick one.
Care and Storage
Rinse the knot thoroughly under warm running water after every shave until the water runs clear, then shake out the excess and stand the brush bristles down so it can dry. Avoid boiling water, harsh detergents and leaving the brush sitting wet in an enclosed space. Do not stand the brush on its knot to dry. Soak the knot in warm water before the shave and keep the handle out of the water. Simpsons advise this for all their brushes, as it prolongs the life of the handle and the setting of the knot.
