Description

This is a Japanese-style “free-hand” Shibumi  razor. As a shavette, it uses 1/2 a DE razor blade that you can change out as frequently as you like. You can use your favorite DE blade broken in half (simply remove a blade from a pack and, without removing the wrapper, fold it in half on the long side.) The blade holder is made of steel and covered with a black, anti-rust, industrial-strength Teflon.

The handle is hand-wrapped in red by an expert craftsman. It provides a firm grip throughout your shave, as well as a stylish covering. This Japanese-style hand doesn’t close on itself so store carefully.

This up-and-coming artisanal brand is pumping out stylish products for the man who loves traditional shaving. The Goodfellas’ Smile is located in northern Italy, home to fast cars, high fashion, and phenomenal grooming. Check out this brand with its modern take on traditional sensibilities.

SHIBUMI: the unique and original razor with replaceable blades

Shibumi Razor

The razor that became legend

Shibumi is a one-of-a-kind straight razor of the shavette type. Forged in a single curved piece, Shibumi represents the maximum expression of simplicity, rigor, balance, and manageability. The stringing on the handle of the Shibumi straight razor is handmade and firm grip throughout the shave.

How to use Shibumi

Shibumi Razor

Shibumi

Usage: How to insert a new razor blade into the razor: Remove the removable coupling from the razor head by pushing outwards. Place the half blade on the appropriate pins of the coupling that act as a guide. Gently reinsert the coupling into the razor head.

Please note: Shibumi is a straight razor of the shavette type and features common half blades. If you wish to use a double blade, it is necessary to break the razor blade in half before inserting it into the razor as indicated below: Remove the razor blade from the packaging and, without removing it from the packaging, fold it in half from the long side. The pressure will break it into 2 equal parts.

I was looking for a kamisori shavette that took half-DE blades. I have western and kamisori shavettes that take the Artist Club blades, and other half-DE shavettes in the western style.

The Shibumi is light and feels good in the hand. The blade loads into an insert that is then slid into the body of the razor. You can use either a snapped DE blade or one of the premade “saloon” style half-DE blades available at suppliers like Sally Beauty.

At first loading a fresh blade is not easy, but patience is key. Eventually it will get easier! The upper part of the blade needs to be tucked under two small clips on the insert and it’s a little fiddly at first.

Using the Shibumi is like using any other naked-edge razor. A careful bit of skin-stretching will help make the hair easier to cut. DE blades are thinner than Gem, Artist Club or hair shaper blades. Unless the edge is held fairly closely by the razor, it will wiggle. The Shibumi holds the blade well. Edge exposure is not huge.

For the price it’s a good razor, though I think I am seeing a little bit of rust in a couple of the nooks and crannies. They don’t say it’s a stainless razor, so probably it’s not. Take the razor apart and rinse well then let it drain and dry and it should be fine.

I can’t comment on its durability or resistance to rust as I haven’t had it very long, but I can say that I got a great shave with the Goodfella’s Smile, Shibumi Japanese Styyle Kamisori razor with a Feather blade. Loading is a bit more challenging than it is with the Parker SRX or Feather Artist Club SR, but it’s not bad. You really get the hang of it quickly. I’ve been shaving with straight razors, both folding handle and Kamisori style, for some time. I really appreciate the control you have with straight razors, especially the Kamisori style like the Shibumi. Maneuverability is top notch. I think it would be considered an aggressive razor with sufficient blade exposure to get a close shave efficiently. Just stretch your skin, and use a light touch and a sharp blade. And, especially if you’re new to using a straight razor (or shavette), go slowly at first. There was no trouble whatsoever holding it steady with wet soapy hands. Aside from providing a great shave, in my opinion it looks really cool. I would probably like it better in stainless steel, but in my opinion that’s the only thing I would change. It was definitely worth the price ($24.99). Overall, I’m very satistifed with this purchase.

I like the looks and feel of this, and it’s a lot less expensive than my Kai and Feather shavettes. However, be aware and beware, it has a LOT of blade exposure. Adjust your technique accordingly or there may be irritation, scrapes, and cuts.
